This week at Urban Academy highlighted the power of community. Part of our mission is that we (students, staff, families) are ‘empowered to contribute’, recognizing that our lives may not be the same as others and that everyone has the ability to be a changemaker.

By giving back, students build a deeper understanding of the world beyond their immediate experiences. They learn to appreciate diverse perspectives and develop a sense of responsibility for the well-being of others. A bonus are the bonds that get created between the UA community and the wider community.

This week, we held our spirit assembly and annual Terry Fox Run. All students from K to Grade 12, along with staff, participated to honor Terry Fox and his mission to find a cure for cancer. In the lead-up to the event, students engaged in classroom discussions, read books about Terry’s life, and reflected on his legacy. During the run, students wore stickers naming who they were running for, making personal connections to the cause and understanding the significance of their effort. More than just a physical event, the Terry Fox Run at UA is about teaching our students the value of perseverance and community spirit. It’s a tradition we’ve proudly participated in for over a decade and one we will continue, combining physical activity, house spirit, and a shared commitment to making a difference.

The importance of community engagement is further emphasized in our Grade 8 and 9 Community Connections course, which is new this year. Designed to empower students to make a meaningful impact, this project-based course encourages students to explore local and broader community issues that they are passionate about. Whether it’s a local environmental cause or a larger social issue, students are given the tools and support to research, plan, and execute a project that will positively impact their chosen community. Through individual or group efforts, they work toward common goals, learning the practical and collaborative skills necessary to be changemakers. We introduced this course because we believe that every student has the power to make a meaningful contribution, and this program offers a structured way for them to explore that potential.

Beyond these projects, the wider community continues to find ways to connect our students with the community. A great example is the upcoming PAX community clean-up coming up on Sunday to take care of our neighbourhood. Or HalloGreen helping to ensure we uphold a community commitment to sustainability. These initiatives instill in our students a sense of pride in their ability to make a tangible difference.

Empowering the UA community to contribute is fundamental to who we are. Whether through tradition, like the Terry Fox Run, Community Connections, or parent-led initiatives, we strive to inspire one another to look outward, connect, and contribute. By offering opportunities to make a difference, we realize that actions, no matter how small, have the potential to change lives and strengthen our communities.

Yours in Student Life & Community,
Mr. Mike Twaites
Student Life Coordinator
