Hello UA Families & Students,
My name is Eshaan, I am an Urban Academy Grade12 student and fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to write this week’s newsletter! The purpose is to offer a little bit of insight into Grade 12. So I will be sharing some information on what a capstone project is, a bit about mine, and why it is a meaningful experience in our Grade 12 year.
A capstone project lasts the majority of the Grade 12 year and it is a way of sharing our learning of a potential career we might be interested in. It culminates in a project, exhibition, or presentation. This makes it a great way to share our learning and explore our interests in a practical and hands-on manner! This is a graduation requirement, and must be completed by every student before graduation and is presented to a panel of students and staff.
For my Capstone, I am planning to contribute to leading the student-run ‘UA Entrepreneurship Club’ this year! Since I will be pursuing Business & Entrepreneurship as my post-secondary field of study, I thought it would be a great opportunity to gather like-minded students to learn and practice business skills and conference with experts in their respective fields. This will also offer mentorship for students in younger grades (Grade 8 and up are welcome to join) and allow us all to gain knowledge and learn the fundamentals of business. We will be attending seminars,, seeking mentorship from skilled entrepreneurs, learning how to start a business, and much more. This couples nicely with UA’s Business Case Competition Club. Students here have so many opportunities to hone their Business and Entrepreneurship skills (Editor’s note, if this may be you please add your details into the Community Talent Database!)
This Capstone project will showcase my passion for business and entrepreneurship. I also recognize that leadership opportunities like this help to ensure strong university applications, although my main motivation is my love for business. Students who have different passions can choose to do their capstone projects in many ways. Some examples of capstone projects are, the development and exhibition of different types of art, or a student who was interested in marine biology researched how to conduct a shark dissection, obtained a shark and did the dissection, also a fellow classmate decided to create their own Model UN Conference at UA called UAMUN for their capstone. The possibilities are endless!
If I look at the larger perspective, I know that Urban Academy is passionate about student growth. I am grateful that the school supports us and gives us opportunities like this, connected to real-life experiences. Teachers allow us to try new ventures and stretch what we are capable of by integrating different ways of learning, this being a very hands-on practical one. I appreciate how I have been allowed to dive deep into my passions at UA, and hopefully become the next ‘creative innovator of tomorrow.’
Yours In Business,
Eshaan (Grade 12 Student)
