This is the time of year when some of the learning that has taken place over the past year comes to life in visible and inspiring ways. Today offered a perfect snapshot of just how diverse and dynamic that learning can be — from music to public speaking to international diplomacy.

The morning began with a beautiful performance in our Musical Mornings series, featuring Grade 5 student Kelly. Her expressive piano playing filled the lobby, making students and staff stop in their tracks and take a moment to appreciate the music. You can catch a glimpse of her performance on our Instagram Story. Musical Mornings are a wonderful addition to the week, and it is open to all students and staff, a wonderful way to be part of the rhythm to start the day.

Then up to the 5th floor, where one of our Grade 12 students, Jason, presented his Capstone Project. The Capstone is a culminating assignment in our senior program, allowing students to explore a topic of deep personal interest — often aligned with their post-secondary goals — through research, analysis, and public presentation. Jason’s topic focused on forms of energy, exploring how different sources are generated, their environmental impact, time efficiency, and cost. His analysis raised thoughtful questions about what our choices say about our societal values. With aspirations in energy engineering, Jason’s presentation was a meaningful step toward his future.

Also, throughout the day, nearly 40 Urban Academy students in Grades 7 to 12 participated in our Model United Nations (MUN) conference, entirely planned and led by UA students. In this simulation, students step into the roles of UN delegates, debating global issues, drafting resolutions, and practicing diplomacy and public speaking. For many of our Grade 7s, it was their first-ever MUN experience — and a great opportunity to build confidence and learn the ropes of international collaboration.

These were just some of the many moments where students had the chance to shine, reflect, and lead. There’s so much more ahead as we welcome families to upcoming events like Frog & Toad and High School Musical, along with our music concerts and arts nights. Each of these experiences is more than a performance — it’s a celebration of the learning, growth, and creativity that define Urban Academy. We would love families, even if they don’t have students in the performances, to attend and take in what a little talent and hard work can do!

Yours in community,
