Hello Families,

Today is one of those days that you can’t help but look around at the sea of orange and contemplate each of our own stories. We stop and think about where we live, how we got here and upon whose shoulders we are standing. It is a reminder that what we have learned about our collective history may not be a fully formed nor fulsome picture of what actually is… or truth. Then, like our students in today’s assembly asked, knowing this truth now what? Our National Day for Truth & Reconciliation is meant to sit in both of those places as we first seek to understand, and then move forward together in action. We encourage you to take this opportunity to ask your children about today’s assembly and the discussions they have had in class. Hopefully, it will lead to some valuable sharing. I also know you will understand when I say that sometimes we can find that our own children have the potential to be our very best teachers.

I also wanted to share some updates about a few of our parent-led community groups this year. Our first is the hard-working PAX, led by Tina Parmar, who has already kicked off with a successful community cleanup. Many of you know that PAX raises funds through programs such as hot lunches, used uniforms and so many other initiatives. This year, they have chosen to put their efforts toward purchasing a removable floor covering for the gym to allow us to run many more community events (while protecting the gym floor), which will be fantastic! Just a little plug for their new SWAG store, too. More size Small pieces will be coming in shortly for Grade 4-12 students to wear on Spirit Wear Fridays!

And finally, as we settle into the new year, our Gala Committee is seeking new members. Details are below, but if you have ever thought about joining this committee to plan our largest fundraising event of the year, why not give it a try now? The Gala’s tentative date is May 4, 2024 (mark your calendars) and we are looking forward to coming together again to celebrate this spring! If you would like some more information on what it may look like to be part of this committee please complete the interest form.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families, and take advantage of the events and ceremonies taking place throughout our communities to reflect upon Truth & Reconciliation and what it means to each of us.

Yours in Developing UA,
Ms. Sonja Kennedy
