We are only two weeks into the school year, and Student Life at Urban Academy is thriving! Major trips are growing, there are robust learning opportunities outside of the classroom, and plenty of chances for students to explore their passions and be involved. As we commit to every student being stretched, by being challenged, trying new things and saying yes to opportunities, student life at UA is a vibrant world full of possibility. Student Life spans the following areas, and likely more, but I wanted to give an update on this year so far!
Athletics: This week, our UA Lions have started the fall season with their first practices. Our athletics program continues to grow, with more teams forming each year. This term, 11 different teams have already kicked off, including 40% of all Grade 3–12 students taking part in either volleyball, cross country or soccer teams. With participation on the rise, we love to see so many of our students getting involved and representing the school in their Lions jerseys.
Clubs: 25+ Extracurricular clubs will begin the week of September 22. Junior School sign-ups will take place in their classrooms by their teachers, while Middle School teachers will help students sign up based on their interests. Senior School students will register themselves and attend the clubs they choose.
Travel: This week, we hosted a wonderful information evening to share details about the major trips available to Grade 7–12 Students being offered this year. These are great opportunities for our students to experience reciprocal learning from global partners while also becoming more culturally responsive. Videos from the events are uploaded to the Parent Hub for families to review. Registration for all trips will remain open until Sunday, September 28. Please ensure your child is signed up before the deadline for these amazing learning opportunities.
Other Opportunities: Exciting news about robotics opportunities will be shared soon with families of students in Grades 6–12. This will include information about the clubs available, ways to connect with other schools, and details on how to get involved. Furthermore, our older students (Grades 8–12) will have the opportunity to attend Model United Nations conferences with more information and sign-up coming out soon.
Thank you for supporting your children in taking part in these opportunities available to them. We’re looking forward to seeing what UA Students can do this school year!
Yours in Student Life,
Mr. Twaites
