June is always a month of reflection and energy at Urban Academy, but nothing captures the spirit of community quite like our annual UA Step-Up Ceremonies. As part of a JK to Grade 12 school, this tradition represents a milestone moment in our students’ educational journeys as they transition into the next chapter of their schooling, celebrating the hard work they have put in and the exciting adventures that lie ahead.
The concept of the “Step-Up” holds a double meaning. As students transition to their next major school division, they quite literally pack up their belongings and move up the stairs to a new floor of the building, claiming their new spaces, classrooms, and lockers. More importantly, the ceremony recognizes the significant academic, social, and emotional growth required to transition between the different stages of childhood and adolescence. It honours the independence they have earned and the new responsibilities awaiting them as they make the developmental jump between Junior, Middle, and Senior schools.
Next Friday, we will gather as a community to honour three distinct groups making these meaningful leaps. Our Junior Kindergarten students celebrate stepping up to Kindergarten, marking their move from early childhood into the foundational world of primary education. Our Grade 3 students will step up to Middle School, leaving the primary nest to embrace greater independence, collaborative projects, and rotating schedules. Finally, our Grade 7 students step up to Senior School, prepared to take on vital leadership roles, advanced academics, and the final stretch toward graduation.
Practically, students in Step-Up grades are acknowledged at the end-of-year assembly, with teachers and students speaking on behalf of each group. After that assembly, JK’s Step-Up to the second floor and as they walk through the hallway, they are welcomed by cheers, signs and celebrations by students and staff in Grades K-2. At the same time on the third floor, Grade 3 students step up into arguably the loudest and most robust Step-Up welcome with music and cheers as Grade 4-6 students welcome them to middle school. And finally, albeit cooler and a bit more subdued, our Grade 7s Step-Up to the fourth floor where music and applause from the Grade 8-12 students welcome them as they sign their yearbooks.
And then we have our graduating class – our Grade 12 students who, instead of a Step-Up celebration, take part in a Step-Out ceremony as they are led by their JK buddies through the junior school on the way to their Commencement Ceremony. Again, UA’s physical stairs are a representation of their journey. Stepping up for students growing at UA, and stepping out as students are ‘launched’ from UA.
To our JK, Grade 3, and Grade 7 students, congratulations on stepping up, and to our Grade 12s, we wish you the absolute best as you step out. We are incredibly proud of your hard work, your resilience, and the community leaders you are becoming.
