I was able to share a wonderful announcement at the Sr. School Showcase webinar that took place this week. I’m now excited to share with you some more information about the incredible program and opportunity that our school is offering to our Sr. students beginning next year: the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Duke of Ed). This prestigious program is designed to empower young people to explore their potential, develop new skills, and contribute to their communities.
What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an internationally recognized program that challenges participants to engage in activities across four key areas:
- Volunteering: Giving back to the community through service.
- Physical Recreation: Improving well-being through sports and physical activities.
- Skills Development: Cultivating personal interests and talents, such as learning a new language or mastering a musical instrument.
- Adventurous Journey: Undertaking outdoor expeditions to foster teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills.
Participants set personal goals in each area and track their progress over time, with awards granted at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels based on their achievements. As you can see, these initiatives already very much line up with many of the opportunities Urban Academy provides students. Taking it to the next step, and offering the full Duke of Ed program is something that enriches the student experience and UA Students are well-positioned to take this on and succeed.
Benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award:
Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offers numerous benefits for our students:
- Personal Development: Enhancing self-confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment.
- Skill Enhancement: Developing practical skills and exploring new interests.
- Community Engagement: Contributing positively to society through volunteering.
- Physical and Mental Well-being: Promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activities and outdoor pursuits.
- Recognition: Achieving a globally recognized award that enhances university and job applications.
The Duke of Edinburgh program fosters growth in participants’ communication, commitment, leadership, teamwork, and problem solving. The development of soft skills is what more and more universities are looking for. Additionally, by participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, our students will not only enrich their own lives but also make meaningful contributions to our school and local communities.
