Hello UA Families,

What a week it has been. I feel like we say that all the time, but Urban Academy is buzzing with activity! This week saw the end of the UA Grades 4–7 Robotics Team practices. Thank you to Mr. Douglas and all of the staff and volunteer students who supported this incredible learning opportunity for our students. The Grade 6/7 teams had a wonderful competition a few weekends ago where they were able to build, code and compete against their peers in a day-long robotics competition. I know plans are already in the works to prepare for Robotics at UA next year, and the students are excited!

It was also a lively week of basketball for so many grades and teams. We are super proud that our Junior Girls (Grades 8–10) made it to the quarterfinals of their playoffs, and our Grade 7 Boys and Grade 6/7 Girls made it to the gold medal match yesterday: both earning silver place in their division. More details are below, but it appears that Urban Academy has fallen in love with Basketball, and the skill demonstrated this year has grown in leaps and bounds with some very impressive finishes. If you are free next Saturday, a fan of basketball or a professional-level cheerer, we welcome you to come and watch our Junior Boys play at the Urban Academy invitational tournament on March 1 at UA!

We are always proud of our students, but we are also very proud of our staff for being recognized as the incredible leaders they are. This week we would also like to announce that our Grade 2 teacher, Ms. Karam, has just been hired to become Stratford Hall’s Junior School Principal for the upcoming school year. While we will miss the wonderful contributions she has made at Urban Academy, we know that she will do incredible things for Junior School Students and families next year in her new leadership position and wish Ms. Karam the best of luck. We will miss her!

Finally, in a week that has highlighted robotics and athletics (and as always a very healthy dose of academics) I am looking forward to seeing our UA Improv Team think on their feet, dig deep into their creative repertoire and find that competitive spirit at the Canadian Improv Games at the Waterfront Theatre this evening. Go Lions!

Yours in Developing UA,
Sonja Kennedy
