Dear Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. I am excited to share some updates on some amazing learning experiences happening inside and outside the school this week. This week different classes have participated in various field trips to experience some Winter Fun! Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students learned some skills at Tumble City Cheer, Grade 2-5 students went ice skating at Moody Park Arena, students in Grades 6-8 went skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Seymour and students from Grades 10-12  got to experience the excitement of aerial silks, tumbling, juggling and tightwire at Vancouver Circus School.

We also acknowledge that today marks BC Family Literacy Day. BC Family Literacy Day is an annual celebration that takes place on January 27 and is dedicated to promoting literacy and a love of reading within families and communities. The aim of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of literacy for individuals, families and the community, and to encourage families to read together.

We all know the positive impact reading has on our mental and physical well-being and its role in promoting empathy, emotional intelligence, and cultural understanding. At our school, we are committed to helping students develop a love for reading. We have a wide variety of books available in our library, and opportunities for independent and guided reading are incorporated into the BC curriculum as early as kindergarten in order to build a habit of reading for pleasure. We also encourage families to take some time to read together; the theme of this year’s event  “celebrate your heritage” provides ample opportunities for reading, research and discussion. There are also a number of family literacy events happening across the province this weekend. For more information on these events, you can check the ABC Life Literacy website.

Today is also the beginning of Book Week in Junior School, with different reading-related activities happening every day and culminating in a book character dress-up on Friday, February 3. For detailed information on Junior School Book Week activities, please check the weekly communication from the homeroom teachers. Other activities happening throughout the week include UA’s annual Read-a-Thon (see PAX below) and Virtual Scholastic Book Fair.

Lastly, I would like to recognize that January 27 is the UN International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. This day is dedicated to remembering the victims of the Holocaust and to promoting tolerance and understanding.

Have a lovely weekend with your families.

Sincerely,

Khatereh Dadar
Associate Principal
