November 6, 2020

Hello UA Parents,

It has certainly been another exciting week at UA and globally. The US election has been front of mind for many over the last few days. As I write this we still do not have a winner declared. The decision in the US election will have a global impact one way or another. My hope is that after the results are in, regardless of the outcome, that the US will find a way forward that allows for some healing to occur and some of the divisiveness to subside. I hope this for my American relatives; it has been a tough several months south of the border.

Next week is a special week with Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11. It is a pause in our day-to-day lives so that we can reflect on those who have served our country to allow us to have the quality of life that we are fortunate to enjoy in Canada. Next Tuesday, Nov. 10 we will have a virtual Remembrance Day Assembly in our classes. As it is an assembly day we are asking students to wear their formal uniforms. In addition to our own UA assembly, we are proud to have a number of UA’s Grade 1, 9, and 10 students as contributors to the City of New Westminster’s online Remembrance Day Ceremony. The ceremony will begin on Wednesday at 10:30 am and you can access it at www.newwestcity.ca/remembranceday (the link will be made active closer to the day).  You will also be able to access it directly from the City of New Westminster Facebook page or YouTube page.

On Tuesday, November 10 at 9:00 am we will be conducting a test of our SMS system through MySchool. This test will send a text message to all cell phone numbers in our system with the word ‘TEST’ as the message. You will not be able to reply to the message. We will be conducting this test to track the accuracy of our data (phone numbers) and as a reminder that in an emergency situation or school closure, this will be how you will receive the first communication from the school.

The Annual Appeal is continuing to attract new donations from our UA families. We really appreciate your participation in the ‘Hear Us Roar’ Appeal – we’re getting there with a 32% participation rate from our families. The appeal goes until December, and we would love to get that number higher. For more info, visit Hear Us Roar Appeal.

Yours in education,
Mr. Slinger
