Cultural diversity is a cornerstone of learning and community. In honour of Asian Heritage Month this May, our Grade 1 students had a special visitor, Ms. Shermin Lalani, a parent at UA. Ms. Lalani shared personal stories, photos, and sparked curiosity and excitement among our young learners.
The session began with Ms. Lalani captivating the class with the enchanting book, ‘The Garden in My Hands’. This touching story celebrates the tradition of applying henna for special occasions through the bond between a mother and daughter. Students were fascinated to discover that Mehndi, used to celebrate occasions like Diwali, Eid, and weddings, is made from the leaves of the henna plant. Ground into a powder and mixed with water, Mehndi creates a paste for intricate designs.
Reflecting on the experience, Aaryz (Grade 1) shared, “I love having my mom in the classroom and having my classmates learn from her! I also love hugging her at school, so it made the memory extra special!”
To commemorate the day, the class collaborated on a unified Mehndi-inspired art piece. Beyond art, Ms. Lalani’s visit was more than just an art lesson; it was a journey into understanding and appreciating cultural diversity, enriching both learning and community spirit at Urban Academy.
Thanks to Ms. Lalani for generously sharing her time and enriching our students’ educational experience.
