Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you to our new families who joined us for the New Family Reception on Wednesday evening. We had approximately 50 guests who had a chance to meet community leaders and learn more about the aspects of the school that our families develop through working together. A thanks as well to the UA families who came out last weekend to the Sapperton Residents’ Association’s Trash Mob, cleaning up our neighbourhood and collecting as much trash as possible. We appreciated the chance to be part of the neighbourhood initiative – a great deal of garbage was collected!

In a little less than two weeks, every family will receive their Annual Appeal package. October is the month we open the Appeal and families are welcome to give at any level that they are comfortable with, but we do ask all families to contribute. There are many initiatives underway in our school for the benefit of your child and funding them properly is necessary to ensure the quality of programming you are expecting for your child. We appreciate every donor and every level of gift. As the school grows, so does our need to ensure that we have enough equipment for the full classes of students we have enrolled and that the materials necessary to support new and growing programs are in place. Please look for your package in the mail and take the time to consider your level of giving. Thank you to all our families for your generosity.

Next week, student ID cards will be distributed. These cards are part of the service provided by Lifetouch, our school photographer. If your child was absent on Picture Day, they will receive their student ID card after picture retake day on October 22.

A reminder to our school community that our staff are addressed by their full surname ie. “Ms. Smith”. Students and parents should not be addressing staff by their first names.

Co-curricular opportunities are well underway throughout the school. Middle and senior students have started regular intramurals in the gym, focused on the four Houses, and we encourage all to come out. We are working with our younger students this week on how they can get started with an intramural program as well. Junior School teachers are organizing the first term of clubs for the younger students and information on those is included below. Middles and seniors are involved in Performing Arts, and we are opening up board games and chess for our students at lunch time. In Athletics, it is volleyball and soccer season. Teachers work with middle and senior students on additional curricular support at lunch and after school with Math Club and STEM Club starting up first. There are two math club opportunities, extra help for students one day and challenge/enrichment on the other. Junior students go to Hume Park and enjoy the equipment out on the decks. There is lots for our students to be a part of in UA student life during their time out of class.

We are hosting John Knox for girls’ volleyball on Wednesday, October 2 at 3:30. Come out and cheer for your Lions!

Have a wonderful weekend.
