Dear Urban Academy Families,

As 2018 draws to a close and we prepare to enjoy the holiday season, I wanted to reflect on the development of our school in the last year. We are in the midst of realizing a number of goals we set for ourselves over this last year. Our enrolment is steadily growing and this year we welcomed over 70 new students and their families to join us in September of this school
year. We are entering the final stages of finishing the first phase of our new school construction that was started just over a year ago – and already we are making plans to complete the top floors. With our growth in enrolment we will need the space soon! We are working hard to mature our programming in technology, sciences and the arts. The performance at the Massey Theatre last week is a good example of how far our students have come in such a short time. We have welcomed new staff to our ranks and they are contributing to the academic program, early primary instruction, assessment, athletics, fine arts and co-curricular opportunities for our students. Our Advancement program is steadily growing as we just completed a very successful Annual Appeal and our Gala Committee is in full swing. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to our Board of Directors for their steadfast governance of our school, a special thank you to our new Chair, Dr. Abi Shu. The governors of the school are determined upon a course that will provide a vibrant and sustainable school and their wise guidance is very valued.

Thank you to an outstanding staff of professional educators and administrative staff who strive for excellence in our students and who are compassionate and caring in their approach with young people. They are providing a rich learning environment for all of our students and the progress you see in your children is evidence of that. Thank you to our parent community. Your work with us to create a school community that supports our students makes all the difference in the culture of our school. Together we have forged a team that is focused on the success of our students and the future of our school and your support is most deeply appreciated.

I will send a Friday email out on January 11 with updated news for the next term, including a few adjustments on school activities that are impacted by the move to the new school. I will also be communicating early in January the plans for the move as well as the expectations for families regarding the move. I will require your commitment to orientation to the new site as we make the move and will be letting you know what is required in order to make that successful and safe for your child.

Have a wonderful holiday season with your families and a happy and prosperous New Year to all. 2019 will prove to be the most exciting yet for our school and our students’ learning. Enjoy the holidays – see you in January.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
