Meet Urban Academy's Educators & Staff
Urban Academy educators and staff are leaders in the education profession. Our diverse team is comprised of thinkers, innovators, movers and shakers. Their qualifications include all of the Ministry of Education requirements including undergraduate degrees in education; many of our staff also hold graduate degrees in specialty areas of instruction. Our teachers are experts in their own realm, each using their unique expertise for mentorship and multi-disciplinary projects that constantly challenge the way students understand the world. Teachers who learn continuously, inspire students to do the same — and that is exactly how we work at Urban Academy.
Mrs. Aline Abrante
Mrs. Abrante has worked in education for over 25 years, devoting herself to making sure learners from all backgrounds and skill levels can succeed in their endeavours. Prior to moving to Canada to earn a Post Degree Diploma in Business Administration, she operated her own tutoring business in Brazil. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Communication with a specialization in English. Outside Urban Academy, you can find Mrs. Abrante either volunteering at a not-for-profit organization or at her dance classes. She is passionate about spending good quality time with her 18-year-old twins, husband, and friends. She believes each person has their own set of skills, and the beauty of a community resides in putting all these pieces together to form a unique mosaic.
Mr. Scott-Ryan Abt
Mr. Abt grew up in North Delta and completed a Bachelor of Arts in History at SFU, a Bachelor of Education at UBC and a Master of Arts at SFU. He’s been a teacher for just over 20 years and has spent seven of them abroad, teaching at international schools in Colombia, Tanzania and Jamaica. Mr. Abt is excited to be in his third year at Urban Academy and working closely with the young learners in his classroom. He speaks German and Spanish and in his spare time, he loves travelling, cooking, writing and going to concerts!
Dr. Riddhi Agrawal
Dr. Agrawal’s passion for science has encouraged her to do two Masters in Science with Genetics as majors, as well as a Masters and a Doctorate in Education. For greater contribution to the field of academics, she has completed 8 different pieces of training in core competencies from Cambridge University and has published 7 research papers. She has received Global Teacher Accreditation twice from the UK (British Council) and India. Coming with her multicultural and diverse teaching background, she believes that learning is a lifelong process and with this goal she provides all her students with an educationally challenging yet fun experience in her classroom. Also, Dr. Agrawal helps her students discover their individuality and works with them to maximize it.
Ms. Christine Albertson
Ms. Albertson graduated with honours from Simon Fraser University, receiving a degree in General Studies in Education with two minors in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as Learning and Developmental Disabilities. She has also completed a Bachelor of Education degree. Through her experience working with children, Ms. Albertson has developed a passion for creating and sustaining inclusive environments where every individual is valued for the unique qualities they bring to the community. Ms. Albertson believes in combining democratic principles with educational practices as it provides an opening for students to have a voice and choice with regard to their own development. When not at school, Ms. Albertson loves going for nature walks, has a passion for photography and spending time with her friends and family.
Ms. Carol Almeida
Ms. Almeida graduated from the University of Rio de Janeiro with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature. Originally from Brazil, she has taught in the US, Brazil, and Canada since 2009. She is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Equity Studies at Simon Fraser University. Ms. Almeida is deeply passionate about teaching middle school students and is dedicated to helping them excel academically while pursuing their interests. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, learning languages, hiking, and taking her cat on walks. Ms. Almeida is looking forward to the upcoming year and is committed to making a positive impact in her students’ lives.
Ms. Jade Baird
Ms. Baird holds a Bachelor of Education from Western University, specializing in Kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as a Bachelor of Music with a minor in Visual Arts. She began her career in early childhood education, where she discovered a deep passion for nurturing young minds. During her time in London, Ontario, she developed curriculum for a private school in Bayfield and served diverse roles as both a homeroom and music specialist teacher. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Baird treasures singing, tending her garden, and immersing herself in the creative world of textile arts. She believes strong relationships form the foundation of a joyful classroom and is dedicated to nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning. Ms. Baird is eager to contribute to Urban Academy’s vibrant community and looks forward to a year of growth, discovery, and shared success alongside its talented team.
Mr. Gaston Beaucage
Mr. Beaucage holds a Bachelor of Technology from BCIT, where he graduated with Distinction, and completed his Bachelor of Education at UBC, receiving the Outstanding Community Field Experience award. Teaching since 2023, he is passionate about creating welcoming, inclusive classroom spaces where students feel respected and supported in their learning. He values curiosity, patience, and lifelong learning, and enjoys helping students grow both academically and personally. Outside the classroom, Mr. Beaucage enjoys camping, weightlifting, playing and programming retro video games.
Ms. Ashleigh Bonifacio
Ms. Bonifacio's background in customer service and her hospitable nature initially led her to become a part of Urban Academy's Out of School care team. Subsequently, she transitioned into her current role as an Administrative Assistant. Beyond her work at UA, Ms. Bonifacio demonstrates her dance talents in film, TV, and live performances, and she actively contributes to a dance studio that caters to individuals of all ages. During her free time, she enjoys being outdoors spotting wildlife and volunteering at her local charitable organization for a girls' self-confidence empowerment program.
Mrs. Patricia Brooke
Mrs. Brooke attended Simon Fraser University where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and History, followed by a Bachelor’s in Education from Brock University. She has always wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember, believing that it’s very rare to have a job that allows her to do all her favourite things every day while empowering her students to strive for confidence and courage in everything they do. Outside of school, Mrs. Brooke runs Shadows and Dreams Theatre company, which has performed Shakespeare productions in Queens Park for the last 12 years. Mrs. Brooke hopes to create joyful and critical thinkers who use their knowledge to make the world the best place it can be.
Ms. Katie Cameron
Ms. Cameron was born and raised in southwestern Ontario, where she attended Brock University. She graduated with first-class standing from the Honours Bachelor of Physical Education program. During her undergraduate degree, she was an intern with the sports medicine program and worked with the varsity rugby and volleyball teams and their athletes. Ms. Cameron attended Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand to complete her Teacher Education. Her subject specializations are Physical Education and Science. When not at school, you’ll find Ms. Cameron exploring the outdoors, travelling, backpacking and hiking, participating in sports, attending concerts, playing guitar, and testing out new recipes.
Ms. Sarah Carroll
Ms. Carroll earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University and a Masters degree in International Education from Framingham State University. Ms. Carroll began her teaching career in Ottawa in 2006. Since then, she has taught at schools around the globe including the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, China, South Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam and the United States of America. Ms. Carroll has worked, both as a homeroom and specialist teacher. When Ms. Carroll is not teaching, she enjoys biking, running, hiking, reading and engaging in the Arts.
Mr. Peter (Wang Cho) Chan
Mr. Wang Cho Peter Chan holds a Master’s in Music Education from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s in Cello Performance and Music Education from the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Chan is passionate about fostering creativity and musical excellence in students. A professional cellist, conductor, and skilled luthier, he has performed internationally with various orchestras and community ensembles and enjoys repairing and crafting string instruments. Outside the classroom, he loves windsurfing, playing soccer, and mentoring young musicians. Mr. Chan is thrilled to inspire UA students to explore their musical talents and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Mr. Danny Craven
Mr. Craven graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland with a Bachelor of Education in Physical Education. He was born and raised in a beautiful part of the world called County Down in North Ireland. After teaching two years in Edinburgh he taught PE at the Rotterdam International School in the Netherlands for nine years before arriving in Canada in 2016 to continue teaching PE in a school in Vancouver. Mr. Craven loves engaging kids of all abilities and ages in games and activities, and his ultimate goals in Physical Education are to make sure his students have fun, experience a wide range of sports and become lifelong participants in physical activity. His hobbies and passions are unsurprisingly all sport-related. Living in North Van he loves mountain biking and snowboarding but his main activity is Football, or Soccer as they call it here. Mr Craven looks forward to adding his experience to the extracurricular Soccer program and is excited to be part of the Urban Academy team!
Ms. Ana De Pinho Gast
Ms. Ana graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa with her BA and BEd Honours. She also holds an MEd in Educational Psychology from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Ms. Ana speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese and has a strong background in mental health counselling and psycho-educational assessments, as well as experience as a behaviour interventionist supporting learners with ASD, ADHD and other challenges that may impede learning or overall well-being. Additionally to her position at Urban Academy, she works as a child and family therapist at Bright Star Counselling in Port Moody. Her therapeutic approach is child-centred, founded in compassion and understanding in order to meet the child at their level and to support their social-emotional development as well as academic demands.
Ms. Nicole DesLauriers
Ms. D. graduated from SFU with a degree in Theatre: Performance, and is working towards becoming a classroom teacher. Over the years, Ms. D. has worn many hats, including drama teacher, preschool teacher, theatre artist, EA, circus instructor, community support worker, and LARPing facilitator. Ms. D. has been the supervisor and coordinator of multiple after school and community programs across the lower mainland and has enjoyed working with children of all ages. Ms. D. believes in the importance of meeting students where they are, as individuals, and that collaborative creation is a wonderful tool for teaching flexibility, social skills and acceptance.
Ms. Jyoti Dhaliwal
Ms. Dhaliwal earned her Bachelor of Education at UBC and is coming to Urban Academy with the experience of working in unique environments that have influenced her teaching style in many ways. She believes in giving differentiated individual lessons that allow students to explore their learning independently and specific to their needs, often through project-based and guided inquiry activities. She is passionate about bringing fun into the classroom and looks forward to creating a teamwork-based classroom structure. In her spare time, Ms. Dhaliwal focuses on home projects—whether that be small renovations or creating artistic pieces—and reading.
Mr. Cameron Douglas
Mr. Douglas grew up in St. Thomas, Ontario and earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo before moving to British Columbia to earn his Bachelor of Education from UBC. Inside the classroom, he is excited about teaching students through project-based learning experiences that encourage a willingness to take risks and try new things.
Mme. Déborah Dumortier
Mme. Dumortier was born in France and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from the University of Paris X Nanterre. She completed her teaching degree and obtained her PGCE in London, UK. Mme. Dumortier comes to UA with experience as both a curriculum and pastoral leader in independent day and boarding schools across the UK, Canada and Hong Kong.
As an educator, Mme. Dumortier is passionate about teaching and learning. She is committed to fostering academic excellence, supporting student well-being and cultivating a future-focused learning environment. She encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, take risks and keep an open mind.
Outside of school, Mme. Dumortier enjoys running, hiking, playing sports, reading and cooking. She also loves travelling, exploring new cultures and learning new languages.
Mr. Devon Edmondson
Mr. Edmondson completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre at the University of Victoria, and a Bachelor of Education at UBC. He has taught for the last three years at Urban Academy and is very honoured to call it home. Mr. Edmondson’s curiosity and pursuit of knowledge drive his teaching and he strives to create a supportive classroom environment where his students will explore what motivates them. Outside of school, Mr. Edmondson enjoys spending his spare time outdoors with his wife, his son, and their little dog, Tucker.
Ms. Kelly Edwards
With over 20 years of administrative experience, Ms. Edwards' dedication greatly contributes to Urban Academy's success and welcoming environment. Her dedicated 18-year career includes 10 years in ISABC schools. Kelly's meticulous organizational skills and unwavering work ethic ensure smooth school operations. Beyond work, she enjoys family time, daily walks with her French Bulldogs, and creative crafts.
Mrs. Alyx Essers-Silverman
Mrs. Essers-Silverman is part of the admin team at Urban Academy. She will act as the Administrative and HR Assistant, greeting all students and parents who come into the school and addressing their questions or needs.
Mrs. Essers-Silverman holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and is a practicing Art Therapist and Art Instructor in her spare time. Additionally, she is ECEA (Early Childhood Educator Assistant) certified and has over five years of experience working in childcare. She enjoys being creative and sharing her passion with others, and she feels most in her element when out in nature or making art.
Ms. Tatiana Ferreira
Mrs. F is a passionate EA who loves working with children and helping them learn and thrive. Mrs. F has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, a Postgraduate Degree in Early Intervention for Special Needs, Certificates in Education and Human Resources and training, education and specializations in Special Needs and Applied Behaviour Analysis. With her experience working as a Behaviour Interventionist for many years, she values inclusion and knows that every child can learn and she is excited to support her students in their journey. Mrs. F loves spending time with her family and friends, lake days, nature walking, reading, and baking.
Ms. Torrie Fischer
Ms. Fischer holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL from Missouri State University. Ms. Fischer has taught in the US, South Korea and Canada, particularly enjoying her years spent in kindergarten. She strives to foster a genuine love and curiosity toward learning from her students and is inspired by what each child brings to her classroom community. When Ms. Fischer isn’t at school, she enjoys binge-reading book series, cats, neighbourhood walks, trips back home to Kansas City, listening to Taylor Swift, exploring new countries and spending time with her husband and their twins.
Mr. Kieran Forry
Mr. Forry is an experienced history teacher, having taught in both the private and public sectors of the English and Canadian education systems. After graduating from London Guildhall University in the UK with a BA Hons in History and Politics, Kieran undertook his postgraduate teacher training at the UCL Institute of Education. This was followed by a Master’s Degree in History Education in 2015, which was also from the IoE. In his spare time, he loves travelling, live music, and all things Star Wars! In addition, he has been active in Holocaust education in both the UK and Canada, which has included taking groups of students to visit Auschwitz as part of the “Lessons from Auschwitz” educational program.
Mme. Céline Foucher
Born and raised in France, Mme. Céline holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and Education and a Master’s Degree in French Linguistics and Curriculum Design. She brings 25 years of experience teaching French in a variety of settings, including 15 years in BC independent schools. Mme. Céline has taught all levels of French, from early years through to adult education, and has served as a language coordinator and teacher trainer in Europe and Southeast Asia. In Canada, she has focused her teaching on the Junior School, developing comprehensive programs to support students’ fluency and social-emotional growth across grade levels.
A true language lover, Mme. Céline also speaks Italian and Dutch, and she is currently learning Spanish. She is passionate about creating joyful, inclusive, and engaging classrooms where students feel empowered to take risks, grow in confidence, and cultivate a lifelong love of languages. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, reading, kayaking, and nurturing her interest in the arts and design.
Mr. Richmond Garcia
Mr. Garcia is originally from the Philippines, where he earned his degree in Education, majoring in Special Education. After moving to Canada, he completed his Early Childhood Education Certificate and Education Assistant Diploma. Since 2017, he has worked in early education and finds great joy in supporting young learners.
Inspired by the authenticity and openness of children, Mr. Garcia is passionate about working with children. Growing up in the countryside, he developed a love for outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, paddleboarding, and camping. He hopes to inspire children to explore their own interests and is committed to caring for them with the same love and attention their families provide.
Ms. Stella Georgilas
Born and raised in New Westminster, Ms. Stella Georgilas holds a Diploma in Special Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of British Columbia. Ms. Georgilas specializes in differentiated instruction within inclusive education; she is a strong advocate for student-centred learning. She believes school is a place where students grow academically, explore passions, build confidence, develop a lifelong love of learning, and of course, have fun along the way. Outside the classroom, Ms. Georgilas enjoys an active lifestyle that includes running after and chauffeuring her two young children to their respective activities. She also loves playing golf, pickleball, kickboxing, swimming, and travelling.
Mrs. Becky Greenhough
Mrs. Greenhough grew up in the South of England before moving West to complete her Bachelor's Degree in Ocean Science followed by her PGCE teaching qualification. She has worked as a teacher and Special Needs Coordinator in England; as well as a teacher, Head of Grade and Head of Learning Support in the UK and IB curriculum International Schools in both Shanghai, China and Singapore. She has experience working with students of all ages from JK through to Grade 12. Mrs. Greenhough is excited to have moved to BC and join the Urban Academy community. She is looking forward to continuing her passion for supporting children to become the best versions of themselves whilst celebrating diversity at every opportunity. Outside of the classroom, Mrs Greenhough loves spending time with her family, hiking in the mountains, walking their dog, scuba diving and travelling.
Ms. Alyssa Han
As an enthusiastic elementary teacher with a specialization in the primary years, Ms. Han is excited to pursue her passion for early learning at Urban Academy. After completing her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education at the University of British Columbia, she taught in various grade levels within the Lower Mainland. Ms. Han is a strong believer in giving children agency and voice in their own learning, and she puts her students’ socio-emotional growth at the forefront of her pedagogy. When she’s not in the classroom, Ms. Han enjoys trying new restaurants, watching different movies, and visiting various art exhibits. Ms. Han looks forward to creating a nurturing classroom community where her students can meaningfully develop their creativity and curiosity for the world around them.
Ms. Melissa Herman
Ms. Herman’s qualifications include a Master of Teaching Secondary Mathematics from SFU, a Bachelor of Science in Immunology from McGill, and a Baccalaureate of Education from the University of Ottawa. Originally from Montreal, she moved to the Lower Mainland to join the team at Urban Academy and is proud to have grown professionally teaching Science and Mathematics here at UA. Ms. Herman enjoys sharing her love of learning with her students and challenging them to think critically and creatively within disciplines where problem-solving and laboratory work are central. In her free time, Ms. Herman enjoys hiking, classical music concerts, and spending time with family and friends.
Ms. Winnie Huang
Ms. Winnie, originally from Taiwan and raised in Vancouver, Canada, has cultivated a deep passion for working with children throughout her career. With extensive experience volunteering in school programs and at the Burnaby Art Gallery, she brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to her role. Leveraging her background in culinary arts and nutrition, Ms. Winnie is dedicated to fostering children’s learning and development through engaging cooking and baking activities. In her leisure time, she enjoys hiking, exploring diverse cuisines, and spending quality moments with her family.
Mrs. Tricia Jacques
Mrs. Jacques has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria, specializing in Elementary Education. Prior to teaching at Urban Academy, Mrs. Jacques taught at a Canadian International School in China and also gained Montessori experience. Surrounded by positive role models and inspirational educators as a child, Mrs. Jacques has always wanted to pursue a career in teaching children. When she is not teaching, Mrs. Jacques enjoys spending time at her family cabin on the Sunshine Coast, travelling to and exploring new places, and remaining active outdoors. In her classroom, Mrs. Jacques strives to foster a collaborative and supportive classroom community where students feel safe, captivated, and motivated to learn. Her hope is that through engaging, hands-on experiences, students develop a lifelong love of learning.
Ms. Esther Kim
Ms. Kim earned her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees from Queen’s University, followed by a Master of Education from the University of Toronto. She strives to create an environment where every student feels safe, valued, and supported, fostering an atmosphere that encourages personal and academic growth, as well as the development of meaningful relationships with peers and teachers. During her spare time, Ms. Kim enjoys immersing herself in a good book, exploring the outdoors through skiing and hiking, and embracing new experiences through travel.
Mr. Harish Kumaar
Mr. Kumaar holds a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity from Simon Fraser University and has experience in higher education as a Teaching Assistant for Software Engineering. With a strong background in secure systems and IT operations, he values practical problem-solving and proactive support. Outside of work, Mr. Kumaar enjoys travelling, staying active, working out and playing sports. He is passionate about using technology to create a secure environment that supports the success of the entire school community.
Ms. Diana Leeson
Ms. Leeson has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from UVIC and a Bachelor of Education degree from UBC with a specialization in Elementary Education. She has taught and lived in four countries (Australia, New Zealand, England, and Canada) to hone her teaching pedagogy. She is well-versed in international best practices in education and believes that this knowledge is an asset for all of her students. She has a passion for using technology in her classroom to help her students reach their fullest potential! Last year she obtained her Masters in Education specializing in School Counseling through City University. She is excited to use her new skills in the classroom by continuing to create a supportive and nurturing environment, and by also implementing strategies that address students' emotional and social needs. Ms. Leeson enjoys being with her friends, trying new exercise classes, and of course teaching and traveling.
Mrs. Cecilia Liddle
Mrs. Liddle holds certificates in Early Childhood Education, Infant Toddler and Special Needs. Since 2006, she has worked with infants and children in a variety of roles including as an early childhood educator in a parent-participation preschool, a kindergarten assistant and in before & after-school programs. She is a compassionate educator who values each child’s unique needs, interests and goals, and believes every child can contribute meaningfully to their school community.
Teaching allows her to see the world through children’s eyes, use her imagination and embrace creativity. She enjoys learning new things and spending time with friends, family and especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Liddle is excited to be part of the Urban Academy community.
Mr. Jamie MacKay
Mr. MacKay is a passionate, caring and experienced educator. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Human Kinetics and was awarded the Head Of Physical Education award before moving to Europe and becoming a professional athlete. Mr. MacKay spent 10 years living in Germany and travelling the world before returning to Canada to continue his education career. Mr. MacKay has specializations in primary school classroom teaching, sport and physical education for all grades, as well as experience in school administration and curriculum writing. Mr. MacKay wrote and designed an innovative and inclusive sports and physical education curriculum that he presents through his Sport Discovery programs. Mr. MacKay is an avid athlete and musician and enjoys engaging with students and parents in a collaborative learning process. Mr. MacKay’s students will be engaged and challenged while focusing on critical thinking, community and creativity. Mr. MacKay and his family are excited to be a part of the Urban Academy community!
Ms. Emily Marsh
Ms. Marsh attended Vancouver Island University, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Biology, and a Bachelor of Secondary Education. She later earned a Master of Education in Science Education at the University of British Columbia. Following an initial teaching career on Vancouver Island, she moved to the lower mainland to join Urban Academy, where she teaches Senior Math and Science. Ms. Marsh’s passion for learning drew her to a career in education, and her teaching philosophy is centred around fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and a life-long love of learning. Her dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship led her to develop the school's "Green Team", and she is affectionately known as the school's unofficial 'plant mom'. Outside the classroom, Ms. Marsh enjoys playing sports, running, camping, and spending time with friends and family.
Ms. Kristine Mathiasen
Ms. Mathiasen moved from Ontario in 2008 and worked as the Admissions Officer at an independent school for 11 years and at SD43 for four years before accepting the position at UA. She is a U of T alumnus with a BA in English Literature and a Certificate in Adult Education from OISE. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and extended family, planning future travel adventures and exploring the outdoors with her spouse and their dog.
Ms. Jeni McBride
Ms. McBride strengthens the team with her expertise in non-profit administration, customer service as well as purchasing and IT service. Driven by a passion for seeing projects through, Ms. McBride is always ready with a smile and a helping hand. She can now be found working upstairs with Mrs.Twaites in the library. An avid animal lover she enjoys spending time outdoors with her two border collies.
Ms. Julia McCarron
Ms. McCarron graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley with a BA in Child and Youth Care and a Master’s in Counselling from City University. Ms. McCarron has continued her passion for supporting children for over 20 years. Her experience includes working over 17 years for the New Westminster School district, an internship at Child and Youth Mental Health in Port Moody and as a Child and Family Therapist at Bright Star Counselling in Port Moody. Ms. McCarron’s therapeutic approach is attentive to being child-centred to establish a safe, compassionate, and supportive relationship to better support the social-emotional needs of students.
Ms. McCarron loves spending her spare time with family and friends, walking her dog, cooking, travelling, camping, biking, and generally anything outdoors.
Ms. Lindsey McEwen
Ms. McEwen earned her Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia in 2011. Since then, she has gained experience teaching in both public and independent schools across the Lower Mainland and London, England. With a lifelong passion for Visual Arts, Ms. McEwen is dedicated to sharing this enthusiasm with her students. In the classroom, she explores a wide range of media and enjoys exploring the works of both historical and contemporary artists. Her goal is to empower students to take artistic risks, solve creative challenges, and develop their unique styles. Outside of teaching, Ms. McEwen enjoys hiking, travelling, baking, and embarking on new creative projects.
Mrs. Miranda McNamara
Mrs. McNamara has been with Urban Academy since 2010. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Law. She brings her talents and skills to the busy Urban Academy administration office, and her strengths in multitasking and customer service ensure that families and the rest of the staff are well supported. Mrs. McNamara enjoys the outdoors and participates in Hawaiian outrigger canoe races in BC, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. She also enjoys Polynesian dance classes — you might see her on stage sometime at the Kitsilano Showboat or the PNE.
Mr. Doug McQuiggan
Mr. McQuiggan grew up in Niagara, Ontario and obtained his H.B.Sc and Master of Teaching from the University of Toronto. During his education, he conducted independent research on teachers who use technology to promote real-world connections with the curriculum. Beyond teaching, Douglas is a published neuroscience researcher who investigated memory through novel and innovative imaging techniques. He has been a performing musician for over 15 years and is excited to share the same level of enthusiasm he demonstrates on stage with the students of Urban Academy.
Mr. Kevin Neilson
Mr. Neilson attended the University of Victoria and holds a Bachelor of Education specializing in Kindergarten to Grade 7, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in History. Through his international teaching experiences including South Korea and England, as well as IB-accredited schools in Victoria and Vancouver, Mr. Neilson comes to Urban Academy with a broad perspective on intentional and open-minded learning. Mr. Neilson—inspired by teachers who made a difference in his life—wishes to share that experience with other generations of learners. The individual relationship and connection to each child, parent and colleague are paramount to education and are first and foremost in his mind. In his free time, Mr. Neilson enjoys travelling, photography, playing soccer and anything and everything Harry Potter.
Ms. Lisa (Kyung Ree) Park
Ms. Park holds a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia. She is dedicated to creating a classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore, be curious, and challenge themselves within a safe and supportive setting. In her free time, she enjoys trail walking, hiking, and cooking.
Mr. Noah Pascoe
Mr. Pascoe attended the University of Toronto where he completed a Bachelor's degree in History and Political Science, followed by a Bachelor's in Education from Queen's University. His years working in summer camps, community centres and music academies drove him to Teacher's College, which in turn led him to work abroad at various international schools (South Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam). As a homeroom teacher, he believes in nurturing a creative, collaborative and open-minded environment where students feel safe to take risks and support one another. Coming from a performing arts background that focused mainly on vocal training, he is excited to start Music Explorations with the Grade 4 students and become involved with the school's robust Arts program. Other passions include film/TV, vinyl, baseball, memoirs, frisbee, good coffee, word games and podcasts.
Ms. Chelsea Pederson
Ms. Pederson has been teaching since 2006, primarily as a French Immersion teacher. She holds a Master of Education degree from Simon Fraser University and brings a strong academic background and passion for language learning to her classroom. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in inclusivity and sustainability, aiming to create a welcoming, environmentally conscious learning environment for all students. Outside of school, she enjoys jogging, soccer, skiing, and softball, and loves exploring new places while travelling with her son.
Ms. Brenda Pellegrin
Ms. Pellegrin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Simon Fraser University and a Diploma in Criminology from Douglas College. After gaining early career experience in Criminal Justice and Educational Assistance in Toronto, Ontario, Ms. Pellegrin returned to British Columbia. There, she transitioned to the BC Public Service, working with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Community Living BC. Later, in the Okanagan, she pursued her passion for fitness and nature and became a behaviour specialist, positively impacting the lives of numerous individuals and families.
At Urban Academy, Ms. Pellegrin is dedicated to sharing her knowledge by building strong connections with staff and fostering curiosity, acceptance and a safe learning environment for students to explore their identities. She is also committed to cultivating a student community characterized by kindness, learning and growth.
Mr. Stéphane Peltier
Mr. Peltier was born and raised in France, where he earned a Master’s degree in Philosophy before moving to Canada. He completed his teacher education at UBC and later earned a Master’s in Education from SFU. Teaching since 2003, he spent two decades at an independent school in Vancouver before joining Urban Academy in 2025. Outside the classroom, he enjoys swimming laps, drawing, cooking, and spending time with his family. He believes that language learning thrives in a welcoming and supportive environment where every student feels comfortable participating and taking risks.
Mrs. Nyah Power
Mrs. Power has an Early Childhood Education Diploma from Ridge Meadows College. She has worked in ECE for over 10 years, gaining experience in various roles, working with children from infants to intermediate. Mrs. Power views each child as capable and curious and believes each child brings their own unique experiences to share. By following the children’s lead, Mrs. Power’s focus is providing an emergent curriculum that inspires curiosity and a love for learning. When not working, Mrs. Power enjoys spending time with her two children and husband and living an active lifestyle.
Mx. Braydee Procillo
Mx. Braydee completed their Bachelor of Education degree at Vancouver Island University in 2019 and has since taught a wide variety of classes throughout their career in the Lower Mainland. From Kindergarten, Dramatic Arts, to Grade 6 Math, all the way to Grade 9 French, Mx. Braydee prides themself on being a down-to-earth, diligent, and enthusiastic educator in every subject. In their free time, Mx. Braydee enjoys reading, playing video games, swimming, and making art. Mx. Braydee looks forward to bringing their unique perspective and experience to the Senior School Humanities team, while also getting to know students of all ages as they assist as a teacher-on-call!
Ms. Joëlle Régnier
Originally from Montréal, Ms. Régnier moved to Vancouver in 1993. She has a degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo and over 30 years of experience in administration, customer service, and editing. In her spare time, Ms. Régnier enjoys cycling, birding, reading, playing recorder, hiking, baking and volunteering.
Ms. Melissa Rigatti
Ms Rigatti is a dedicated and caring teacher who believes every child is an individual. Ms. Rigatti holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Vermont and a Bachelor of Education from Ontario Tech University. She spent the first part of her career as a consultant; however, she always had a love of teaching and children, so decided to teach at the elementary level. Ms. Rigatti strives to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every student has the opportunity to experience success and progress. It is her goal to encourage students to view the world around them as a place of learning and discovery and thus instill a lifelong love of learning in them. During her free time, you can find Ms. Rigatti swimming, hiking the North Shore trails, biking around the city, or whipping up a batch of cookies.
Mrs. Navreet Kaur Saini
Mrs. Saini is an experienced educator with a Master’s in Botany and a Master’s in Education from
Lucknow University in India, as well as an MBA from Trinity Western University in Canada. Since 2012, she has supported student learning by creating inclusive, adaptable environments where all learners can succeed.
Her background in botany continues to inspire her outside the classroom through gardening and nature-themed art. A lifelong learner and creative individual, Mrs. Saini enjoys painting and values opportunities to encourage curiosity and growth in her students. She is committed to fostering a strong foundation for learning that supports both academic and personal development.
Mr. Travis Salazar
Mr. Salazar is an experienced web and digital media designer who has worked for local, provincial and global organizations in the for-profit and non-profit sectors. With a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing Management from Langara College and a Senior Management Certificate in New Media Design from BCIT, he brings a depth of creative, technical and marketing skills and expertise to Urban Academy. In his free time, Mr. Salazar relaxes by planning travel adventures with his wife, playing guitar, dragon boating, cooking and baking.
Ms. Elizabeth Scali
Ms. Scali graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She completed the teacher education program at Simon Fraser University, specializing in International and Global Education, and had the opportunity to teach overseas in Mexico and South Korea. Ms. Scali loves teaching her students with a global focus and inspiring them to be empathic and active citizens who understand and appreciate the diversity that exists in the world around them. She recently completed her Master of Education in Health and Active Living and values mindfulness and place-based learning as part of her teaching and personal pedagogy. In her spare time, Ms. Scali enjoys swimming, playing football, hiking, writing children’s books, cooking, travelling and time with family.
Ms. Amanda Taylor
Ms. Taylor has been teaching since 2016, with her focus on the humanities. She is a proud double UBC graduate, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Bachelor of Education. Her first teaching experiences were teaching English in Stevenage, England, and then she spent 9 years teaching social studies, and is now very excited to return to her English and literature roots.
She is a firm believer in equipping her students with strong critical thinking skills; the power to question, explore, and wonder is not only key to the human experience, but it is also an enormous asset for achieving successful and rewarding lives. It also supports empathy and an intrinsic appreciation of the beauty of diversity. Stories are one way of exploring the world, and Ms. Taylor loves to guide her students in learning to more deeply understand what they read and to voice their own experiences with clarity and strength.
Ms. Taylor loves art, poetry, Jurassic Park, and bunnies. She and her partner Nick are proud parents of pre-schooler Alexander, and the family can often be found playing board games or watching movies together.
Ms. Lindsay Twaites
Ms. Twaites graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She also completed her teacher education program at UBC. Ms. Twaites has worked as a homeroom teacher teaching grades one, two and three for over a decade, with extensive experience and training in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years program. She values inquiry-based approaches to learning and is passionate about encouraging students to apply their learning to take action, connecting with and impacting their local and global communities wherever possible.
Ms. Twaites enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband Mike, and their young son Noah, as well as playing baseball, making jewellery, travelling and reading. She looks forward to supporting and nurturing students in the library this year, in a space where they feel safe, included, and inspired to think critically and creatively.
Ms. Gabriela Valla
Ms. Valla is thrilled to be joining the Urban Academy team! After spending the past 20 years working with students internationally, she's excited to bring her passion for education back to Canada. Ms. Valla has a wealth of experience, having taught both elementary and middle school students in Alberta and abroad. She's passionate about creating a student-centered learning environment where every child can thrive. She holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master in Educational Leadership. Outside of exploring different countries and cultures, Ms. Valla enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her family. She is eager to contribute to the school's success and looks forward to being a part of the talented team at Urban Academy.
Mr. Thanh Vo
Mr. Vo graduated from UBC with a B.A. in Psychology and a B.Ed. with an IB specialization. Since 2014, he has worked in diverse school settings and is committed to creating inclusive, student-centred learning environments. Mr. Vo brings a thoughtful approach to education, with a passion for fostering critical thinking and real-world application. He encourages students not only to pursue their dreams but, more importantly, to find fulfillment while maintaining a balanced lifestyle along the way. Outside the classroom, Mr. Vo enjoys playing both disc golf and golf, watching UFC, and solving challenging logic puzzles.
Ms. Tara Worth
Ms. Worth graduated from SFU with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Theatre. She also holds a Master’s in Counselling from City University. Ms. Worth has a rich background in mental health, working in the Downtown Eastside, the New Westminster School District, SHARE Community Services and as a current Youth Counsellor at Bright Star Counselling in Port Moody. Her therapeutic approach is grounded in developing a warm and non-judgemental relationship with students to create opportunities for connection and validation.
Outside of school, Ms. Worth enjoys plant-based cooking, attending live theatre, reading, camping, and spending time with her family. She is currently teaching herself to sketch and draw and would love any lessons that students would like to teach her. Ms. Worth is excited to learn and grow alongside the students at Urban Academy.
