In order to build best practices industry-wide, and find support from peers within the industry, Urban Academy is a member of a number of associations and groups that significantly impact both students and staff for the better. Working with local and regional associations and organisations encourages constant improvement and learning as educational professionals.
Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) is a community of independent schools who choose to meet and exceed rigorous National Standards that inspire continuous whole school improvement. Member schools commit to the highest standards in education, leadership, governance and student experience.
Urban Academy is proud to be a fully accredited CAIS member school. This recognition follows a rigorous three-year process that included a detailed internal review, extensive documentation, and a peer review visit by leaders from other CAIS schools. Every aspect of Urban Academy, from academic programs and student life to leadership, operations, and governance, was reviewed against national standards.
Achieving CAIS accreditation is a meaningful milestone for our school. It affirms our commitment to continuous improvement and future-focused education, ensuring that students benefit from high-quality teaching, strong leadership, and a supportive, innovative learning environment.
Membership in the Independent School Association of BC (ISABC) Allows for opportunities for both students and teachers to connect with BC’s education industry. students are able to take part in leadership conferences, competitions, sporting events, Model UN, and many other opportunities that connect a wide number of independent school students to one another in a learning and friendly competition environment.
School staff are able to take part in working and learning groups with other educational leaders from across the province. Through the ISABC network and professional development opportunities, staff improve their practices and work with thought leaders in education. they learn to challenge one another and support one another in their work.
The Federation of Independent Schools Association of BC (FISA BC) is an umbrella organisation for independent school associations in British Columbia, and is directly affiliated with ISABC. Independent schools are understood to be those schools not owned and operated by the province, and which are regulated by the Independent School Act.
The Federation is the voice for its members in British Columbia and acts as a liaison between the schools and the government, as well as other educational institutions. FISA BC is dedicated to assisting independent schools in maintaining their independence while seeking fair treatment for them in legislative and financial matters.
The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers Senior School students the opportunity to take university-level courses and earn credits recognized by post-secondary institutions worldwide. AP courses challenge students with rigorous, in-depth learning, preparing them for academic success beyond Urban Academy. By taking AP, Urban Academy students develop critical thinking skills, gain a competitive edge for university admissions and may receive university credit for their achievements.
The Greater Vancouver Independent Schools Athletic Association (GVISAA) organizes athletic competitions for independent schools in the Greater Vancouver area. Through GVISAA, Urban Academy students participate in a variety of sports, promoting teamwork, skill development, and friendly competition while building school spirit.
BC School Sports (BCSS) is the governing body for interschool athletics in British Columbia, supporting over 440 member schools and more than 96,000 student-athletes annually.
BC School Sports is the provincial organization responsible for overseeing high school athletics in British Columbia. It provides students with opportunities to compete in a variety of sports while promoting physical fitness, leadership, and sportsmanship, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
Fraser North Athletics governs and organizes interschool sports for schools in New Westminster, Burnaby, Coquitlam, and surrounding areas. It provides opportunities for students to engage in a wide range of sports, develop their athletic abilities, and represent their school in regional competitions.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed) is an international Award for young people that equips them to be ready for the world and life. The Award empowers young people to learn and grow through non-formal education, all while working towards a globally recognized accreditation.
Students don’t just participate—they take the lead. Our Senior School program integrates Duke of Ed opportunities into existing extracurriculars, leadership initiatives and outdoor education programs. The Duke of Ed is all about exploration, growth, and making an impact. Each level of the program is designed to challenge students in key areas—whether it’s giving back to the community, building new skills, staying active, or embracing outdoor adventure.
The Independent Schools Experiential Education Network (ISEEN) is a leading organization dedicated to advancing experiential education in independent schools. Their programs emphasize justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, aiming to cultivate active global citizens committed to a more just, equitable and sustainable world.
