The June trip to the Cheakamus Centre in Squamish, BC, was an unforgettable experience for our Grade 11 and 12 students. Nestled in the stunning natural beauty of Squamish, the camp provided an ideal setting for students to examine Indigenous perspectives on sustainability and deepen their connection to the land.

Exploring Indigenous Knowledge Systems

Throughout our stay, we engaged in activities that highlighted the importance of understanding and respecting Indigenous knowledge systems. We learned about traditional practices that have sustained communities for generations and gained insights into the profound relationship between Indigenous peoples and their environment. This experience challenged us to reflect on our own relationship with the land and consider how we can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Connecting with Nature

One of the most impactful aspects of the trip was the time spent in nature, away from the distractions of everyday life. Students had the opportunity to reconnect with the natural world and with each other. Whether hiking through the forest, exploring the river, or simply sitting quietly and absorbing the tranquility, these moments fostered a sense of peace and reflection.

Creating Core Memories

Evenings at the camp were filled with laughter and camaraderie as we gathered around the campfire. Singing songs and sharing stories, students felt a sense of youthful joy and togetherness. For our Grade 12 students especially, this trip was particularly poignant as it marked their final week as high school students. They expressed how meaningful it was to share this experience with their peers, creating lasting memories as they prepared to embark on new adventures.

Overall, the trip to the Cheakamus Centre was more than just an educational outing; it was a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and each other. It underscored the need for all of us to spend more time appreciating the natural world and fostering relationships that sustain us. This journey will undoubtedly remain a core memory for our students, symbolizing a beautiful send-off for the graduating class and a deep learning experience for all.
