Grade 10-12 students embarked on an unforgettable cultural journey to Japan this March. This trip wasn’t just about exploring Tokyo’s bustling streets or marvelling at Kyoto’s ancient temples—it was a transformative experience that deepened friendships, ignited curiosity, and immersed our Senior School in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture.

Tokyo: Anime, Shrines, and Urban Adventures

Our adventure began in Tokyo, where we delved into the vibrant world of anime at the Suginami Anime Museum, wandered through the bustling streets of downtown Tokyo, and found peace at the serene Meiji Shrine. We enjoyed free time at the famous Tsukiji Fish Market, explored the futuristic Odaiba area, visited the historic Sensō-ji Temple, and indulged in the tech-lover’s paradise of Akihabara Electric Town. We ended our time in Tokyo with a memorable stop in Hakone where we ascended Mount Komagatake by cable car, and were treated to breathtaking views of the iconic Mount Fuji. A boat cruise across the serene Lake Ashi followed, before we headed back to Tokyo for a fun-filled evening of Karaoke.

Kyoto & Osaka: Temples, Gardens, Castles, Markets and Ancient Traditions

Transitioning to the second leg of our journey, we bid farewell to Tokyo and travelled to Kyoto via bullet train. Along the way, we stopped for a day trip to Nara, where the students were awed by the majestic Todai-ji Temple and the Kasuga Grand Shrine. The friendly deer in the park, which even bowed before being fed, was a highlight! In Kyoto, we visited the stunning Kinkaku-ji temple (Golden Pavilion) and walked through the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Continuing south to Osaka, our time was filled with visits to Osaka Castle, the panoramic Umeda Sky Garden, the vibrant Dotonbori District, and the lively Kuromon Market.

Reflections and Memories

Our journey was a blend of cultural immersion, scenic beauty, and new friendships. The students soaked up every moment, and we were thrilled to witness this trip through their eyes as they tasted Wagyu beef, played games in Akihabara, cooked their own Okonomiyaki, crawled through pillars to be reborn in the  Todai-ji Temple and shopped until they dropped in Dotonburi. This trip remains a highlight of the 2023-24 school year, and a cherished memory for all of us. It showcased the beauty of Japan, as well as the beauty of student connection in a way that will stay with us for years to come.
