Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you for joining us for the Meet the Teacher evenings at both campuses this week. This is an important part of orientation for new families but also for our returning families, as they get to know the expectations of a new grade, curriculum and new set of teachers. We want to keep the lines of communication open and we welcome your questions and feedback as we work with your child.

We are already well into course work and co-curricular activities. Our middle school students were dragon boating at False Creek today and clubs at Uptown are flourishing. Our Grades 8-12 students are away next week at a wonderful learning opportunity at the Bamfield Marine Research Sciences Station on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Bamfield is a highly respected international research station and students will have the opportunity to participate in labs and view the work underway, including trips out in the boats as staff monitor marine life. This is an amazing experience for our Seniors. We applied to the wait list some time ago (we compete with post-secondary institutions for a spot) and when a chance arose – at a fabulous time of the year in terms of our local climate and the marine work – we jumped at it. We look forward to the learning that they bring back.

Our Annual Appeal is part of our yearly Advancement program and this year it will launch in October, rather than November. We heard your feedback on an earlier start. I am letting our families know that you can expect to see the package of information arrive in the mail at the beginning of October. This is a critical part of providing the resources necessary for our school and at Urban Academy, we expect all families to contribute to the Appeal at whatever level that they are able. Our Annual Appeal has been most successful and has funded remarkable opportunities for our students through the generosity of our school community. Our families have been so generous and again this year, we will be outfitting our new school.

Have a wonderful weekend with your families and we look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont

Head of School
