Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you to parents who were able to join us for Meet the Teacher Night this week. We appreciated providing you with the information you will need to help your child be successful. We are moving away from the class blog system we have used for the last several years and implementing something at both the Junior and Senior levels that we hope you will find easier to use and more adaptable to sharing student work. JK-Grade 4 will use Seesaw as their communication vehicle and families were invited to get set up with that this week. Grades 5-12 will use Google Classroom, also an easy system to use and one the students are already familiar with. Please sign on as soon as you are able so that you are able to see student work and upcoming classroom events and assignments due.

School pictures will be taken on Monday, Sept. 16. Lifetouch will be here and ready to start as soon as school convenes. It is a day for formal uniform so please look that out for your child. Athletics are getting started with the volleyball season underway, auditions and rehearsals for Performing Arts productions have started and intramurals in the gym begin next. Our Middles were off dragon boating at False Creek today. We are introducing more and more activities and materials out on the decks for students. We have started Gaga Ball and it is a hit with our students. Our third floor east deck for the older students is completed and they are enjoying using it.

We have completed many of the items in our front foyer that make it a welcoming entrance to the school. The quilt that the students created together when we moved in has been hung and our thanks to Ms. Lindsey McEwen and her mother, Ms. Sylvia McEwen, who led the project. We have our donor recognition tree in place, designed by Straight Line Designs. The glass etchings in the main floor corridor tell the story of UA. The beautiful rug in the foyer is a gift of two donors to the school and depicts the spot in the Fraser River where we are situated. We have been working with our students to show care and respect for the lovely gifts we have received, not to eat or drink in the theatre or on the rug and to treat the furniture with the same respect they show to furnishings at home. Thank you for supporting our work in this area and for setting the example for our students.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
