June 14, 2019

Dear Urban Academy Families,

We had an excellent week. The Grade 6 and 7 students have been at Strathcona Park Lodge camp since Tuesday and have enjoyed themselves. Strathcona is an excellent camp, especially for middle school students, in a beautiful part of our province. They will arrive home this afternoon tired and ready for their beds! We also enjoyed hosting our dads this morning for Father’s Day Breakfast. Thank you to the team who put this together so well.

We are well into producing report cards now with the end of term for elementary students and the exam schedule at its mid-point for middle and senior students. Exams for Grade 12 students go right to the morning of June 26, they will be ready for their report cards and their summer.

Please also note that Sports Day is next Friday, June 21 at Hume Park. Details are outlined below. You will also see some important notes below regarding bus registration for our September Burnaby and Tri-Cities routes and Parent Volunteer Hours confirmation requested. Teachers will be sending home student materials by June 24 and Yearbooks will be handed out on that day as well. The final tasks are underway.

Our summer closure for the administrative team at UA will be in effect from July 22 to August 6. Out of School Care will continue to operate every weekday of the summer, regardless of the administrative closure. Finance, Admin, Admissions and the Head’s office will not be responding to messages during that two-week period. Other days throughout the summer we are operational, checking and responding to messages.

I have news to share that two of our teachers are moving on to other assignments at sister ISABC schools. Ms. Lauren Schmidt will leave us to go to West Point Grey Academy and Ms. Merrill Kost will take a teaching position at St. John’s School. We will miss both of these wonderful teachers and wish them the very best. I have appreciated Ms. Kost’s leadership and the work Ms. Schmidt has done to develop our Kindergarten program and want to thank both of them. We have Mrs. Rebecca Pike and Ms. Bryony Drought joining us for primary positions in the fall. We also have a number of new and additional teachers that we are hiring to handle our growing enrollment and that roster will be shared with our community as soon as it is complete.

We are filling available Out of School Care spots for the summer. There are a few weeks with two or three-day packages left (for Grades 1 and up) if families still need limited care so please inquire if that can help your family out.

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
