Dear Urban Academy Families,

The Early Bird tickets for our Gala are now on sale until February 9. For our new families who will never have attended an Urban Academy Gala, this is one of the highlights of the year in our school community. It is a major fundraiser for the school and a wonderful evening for our school community to come together and enjoy each others’ company. The Gala is on the evening of March 2, which is the end of the week we move into our new school, so we will certainly have something to celebrate. The Gala Committee is made up of UA parents and supported by members of staff. Gala Chair Heather Hall heads a dedicated and energetic group of volunteers who provide an outstanding event including a lovely meal, and entertainment as well as opportunities to bid on silent and live auction items. Please purchase your tickets early and you are most welcome to bring guests to the event as well. We will be reaching out to the new families who have just been admitted to UA for September, so it will be an opportunity to welcome them to our school community. Thank you to all of our families for their support of this event. If you have items to auction or would like to talk to the Gala Committee about ideas for the much anticipated live auction portion of the evening, please email gala@urbanacademy.ca.

Families may have noticed a lot of boxes at both Uptown and Robson. Staff are packing up both sites and disposing of a lot of items. We are also arranging the activities for the students in the final two to three days as we move at the end of the month and will be in touch with families on those details. The work at the site is going very well. Classrooms are being finalized and we are working on commissioning the site and preparing for the series of inspections necessary.

Our elementary students have started their dance unit at Robson, which continues into February. We have sufficient time at Robson now to complete that opportunity and Kids in Motion, located in Sapperton, has provided programming for us for the last couple of years. Our students look forward to that with enthusiasm. On Thursday, a group of middle school students headed off to St. Michael’s University for a leadership conference, always a great experience for them. Today at Uptown our students were off to Mount Seymour for the Grade 4 and 5 students and Whistler for the Grade 6-12 students. The snow is great and the weather looked to be ideal!

Please plan to join us for the Community Leadership Evening on February 5. The evite is out for response this week and it is a wonderful chance to meet school community leaders and to learn of the opportunities to serve the school as a parent. A specific invitation from your PAX president is included in this week’s email.

Re-registration documents are out this week for returning families and just a reminder that the paperwork is due in to us by February 21 with cheques dated February 28. We want all of our returning families taken care of before the move.

Have a wonderful weekend with your family. We will see everyone on Monday morning.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
