Dear Urban Academy Families,

We have had a wonderful week at school, lots on the go. Our girls’ volleyball team challenged the staff to a match and both groups had a lot of fun playing against each other. The students prevailed, winning two out of the three games and demonstrating that they have developed their skills over this season.

Our students took part in Remembrance Day assemblies on Wednesday of this week. The first assembly was for JK-Grade 3 students and the second was for Grades 4-12 with our Performing Arts students leading the program. This assembly is always a significant learning opportunity for our students so the ability to hold it in our own facility and concentrate on the different age levels enhances the students’ understanding of concepts that are important but can be difficult to grasp when they live every day in safe communities and a tolerant nation. This year we spent some time focusing on those who have come to Canada to seek refuge from conflict. It was another wonderful opportunity for our staff and students to work together as one group on the learning best for each age level.

Thank you to our families who have already donated to the Annual Appeal. This Appeal drive has already had over $60,000 donated for our growing school. If you have not had a chance to get your donation to us, please take a moment to do so. Our Advancement program funds so many of the extras your children enjoy, and our community’s support is very valued and appreciated.

The Head of School and the design team at Grant Architecture Studio held two community consultations in the Sapperton community this week to share information on our application to add a 5th floor to the school building. We are in the process of applying the City of New Westminster to finish the build with one last floor on top, provided we receive approval and permitting to do so. It is critical we continue to be responsible neighbours in this local community; we have made a difference here with our school and our school community joining an established neighbourhood. We want our school to add to the fabric of the community in positive ways and that includes ensuring we park in publicly designated areas and respect our neighbours.

Next week our intermediate and senior students are off to the Vancouver Symphony, a trip to the Vancouver Art Gallery and an Outdoor Ed day of rock climbing – lots of wonderful extensions to learning in the classroom. Final exams and projects have due dates coming up as we get to the end of the term so please ensure that you have checked out Google Classroom for your child in Grade 5 and up.

Please note below the uniform policy expectations as the colder weather approaches – it is time to be prepared with items that are compliant with the policy. Hopefully we will get a little more of this beautiful weather! The process for potential school closures is also provided below.

We have attached a communication from Fraser Health on new vaccination status rights. We will comply with their directive in regards to sharing our enrolment contacts.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
