Dear UA Parents,

This week inside the school there has been a noticeable increase in excitement as students prepare for the Break, and in some cases for the first airplane holiday in years! The school was alive with dance parties, gym celebrations, and choreographed show choir numbers making use of our lights and sound system in the theatre. We are excited to share our new Middle School newsletter with our Middle School families (to arrive in your email tomorrow morning) about all sorts of student activities these last few weeks.

However, as many of us ready ourselves to enjoy some rest and free time over Spring Break, I feel it is important to acknowledge that many of our UA families are being directly impacted by the needless and tragic events that are unfolding in Ukraine. To all of you, know that my heart is with you as you manage and cope with the difficulties of family and friends who are living through this.

You have likely already heard about the recent changes in health mandates that were announced yesterday. The changes in K-12 schools will begin after Spring Break, so we will share those details prior to the return to school and as information is shared with us.

Our Gala Committee is working hard to put a fantastic event together that will help raise funds to add furniture, athletic equipment, technology, and so much more for UA students. They could use a little help so please consider donating items to the live and silent auction – there are some creative ideas attached to this newsletter (have culinary skills, seasons’ tickets, a timeshare somewhere, a day on your boat?) that you can offer up as a fun silent or live auction item. We have had some wild auction items in the past, so email your ideas to gala@urbanacademy.ca! Also, don’t forget to buy your early bird tickets by April 1 on our Gala Website.

I personally want to thank our whole community – students, parents, and staff, for their ongoing support and commitment to keeping our community safe and healthy. Although I recognize that the pandemic is not over, I believe we can reflect on how Urban Academy has navigated these challenging years and be proud of how we have been able to care for one another and continue to focus on educating our students and offering quality experiences. We are looking forward to the balance of the year with more travel, experiential education and co-curricular experiences as we continue to return to the exceptional opportunities students and parents have been used to from UA in years past.

Yours in education,

Mr. Slinger
