Head of School’s Weekly Message
February 7, 2020
Dear Urban Academy Families,
It has been a great week with a lot of activities for students that extend learning beyond the classroom. Our UA Show Choir has been in Disneyland California, working and learning with professional performers. They fly home today, tired and much more learned in their craft than when they left. Our basketball teams are practicing diligently. We played St. John’s this week, a tough team with our students battling hard. Our Grades 2 and 3 students are snowshoeing at Mount Seymour today and Grade 4 students are ice skating at Moody Park Arena. It is a busy time of learning as we head toward the end of the term in three weeks with lots left to accomplish before the second-term report cards.
I find that we need to make an adjustment to our May calendar this year. We had a Professional Day planned for May 15 but for a number of reasons this is problematic, and we will be moving the Professional Day to May 22, one week later. I wanted families to know as they may be making plans around the long weekend, but this may also work well as the Pro-D day would then fall the day after the Spring Plays and that may be a day some families would appreciate a break as well. Please note this on your calendars.
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Bruno Jury to the Board as a Member-at-Large. The Jury family have two children at UA, one in Grade 4 and the other in Junior Kindergarten. We are most pleased to be working with Bruno and we welcome him to the Board. His background and skills are very appreciated, and we look forward to working with him on behalf of the school community.
Our Gala Committee is in full swing and are planning a wonderful event for Saturday, April 18. This has become a much-enjoyed tradition at UA, an evening of fundraising for the school, and a wonderful opportunity for our community to socialize and celebrate together. Tickets are on sale online now at www.urbanacademygala.com. Please get your tickets organized soon, as the venue traditionally sells out and you will not want to miss this community event. Early Bird rates are available until Saturday, February 29.
Have an enjoyable weekend – hopefully we are past the snow!
