Dear Urban Academy Families,

Congratulations to the Board of Directors, staff, students, and our parent community on the new Head of School! Mr. Slinger and I are already working closely with each other to make the move to a new Head in the fall go as smoothly as possible and to have things in place for him for school opening in September. The Board undertook a most thoughtful process, very carefully considering the needs and future of the school as well as the feedback provided by both the staff and the community. The outcome is one that will stand UA in good stead. I know that staff and families will enjoy meeting Mr. Slinger and working with him next year. I am very much enjoying getting to know him and supporting his transition. On behalf of our students, staff and community, your Head of School most warmly welcomes Mr. Slinger to Urban Academy!

Thank you to our families who have already signed up for their Student-Led Conferences and Parent-Teacher Interviews taking place next week. Please ensure you have booked your time slot so that you are able to have a discussion with your child’s teacher(s). For those teachers who teach several courses or who have a very full homeroom, both days get fully booked very quickly, so please ensure you sign up as soon as possible. Please remember that JK to Grade 5 students wear formal uniform to their Student-Led Conferences and that siblings do not attend these.

Our intermediate, middle, and senior students enjoyed a wonderful string quartet concert this week. ‘Viano’ performed for them in our theatre. Thank you for the Zawadiuk family for making this wonderful opportunity possible for our students.

The PAX Uniform Sale will not take place next week as originally noted on the calendar but has been moved to Tuesday, May 26, which may allow families more opportunity to purchase gently used uniform pieces to help round out uniform for next year. Our JK/K Spring Concert will take place for those families on June 11, and our PAX Book Sale is now scheduled for April 23-24.

The Urban Academy Board of Directors would like to make sure the community is always aware of the volunteer opportunities we have available at the school. Our community is stronger for the time, talent, and dedication our parent volunteers give to help achieve our community goals, large or small. This year we did not hold the Community Leadership evening, as our newly formed teams were all in full swing with this year’s initiatives. However, there will be spots for new volunteers that arise as we move into next year, so please consider how you might support Urban Academy by dedicating time to Gala or PAX, for example, or for specific volunteer activities; please contact volunteer@urbanacademy.ca for more information. If you are interested in learning more about the application process to be considered for service on the Board of Directors, please email Karim Merali at UABDC@urbanacademy.ca.

Attached is an update on the ongoing health alerts regarding COVID-19. If any of our students or families are traveling to or from another country, we ask you to inform us and to self-isolate for 14 days.

Have a restful and enjoyable weekend. We look forward to seeing all of you on Monday morning.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
