Dear UA Parents,

What a difference a day can make… yesterday I was shovelling 3 inches of the heaviest snow you could imagine off my driveway, and today seems like spring can’t be too far away. The joys of West Coast weather.

This week we learned of the passing of a prominent figure in Urban Academy’s history. Ms. June Harrison, Urban Academy’s first Head of School passed away at the end of last week. I did not have the pleasure to meet June, but I have heard many stories about the passion she had for education and how integral she was to building the educational foundation of Urban Academy in those early and formative years of the school. I imagine June was very proud of her contributions and of the growth and development of Urban Academy, which was evidenced by her continued involvement in many of the traditional UA community events such as the Mother’s Day Tea. I know June will be missed dearly by her family and friends, as well as the members of the school communities she served over the years in New Westminster. I encourage you to learn more about June in the lovely note that is attached to the update, including an article from the local paper describing the book that June wrote about her life titled: Finding Home: The Values of a Pioneer Family in North Central B.C. We have a few copies in the school library and look forward to students learning from one of the original Urban Academy pioneers.

We are very excited about a project that has started in the theatre as a result of the Annual Appeal. We will soon have a sound-treated recording room for our musicians and singers to access. We are in the process of having sound treatment installed in the practice room so that it will be as close to soundproof as we can make it. Additionally, the sound engineers we have worked with have helped us reduce the amount of sound that escapes the theatre during band and music classes. This work has already been completed and has made a big difference with the noise level in the front foyer and the office. Thank you again to everyone who contributed to the Annual Appeal to help this project become reality.

Please note that today is the last day for re-registration for the coming year. If you have not yet submitted your re-registration documents and relevant fees please do so today as we have many students who have completed their intake assessments at all grade levels who would like to become Urban Academy students.

With the calendar changing to March next week, it is time to start looking ahead to spring. I am aware that one of the best events of UA’s spring calendar is the Annual Gala. Well, this year it is going to be virtual and awesome. It will be taking place on May 15 from your couch, your patio, or even from your Peloton bike. I have had a sneak peek at the lineup for the evening’s program and I can tell you that it is not to be missed. Should your company wish to sponsor the Gala or should you have an item to donate to the auction, please see further details below.

Yours in education,

Mr. Slinger
