Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you to our Grade 1 to 5 parents who have adjusted their parking to ensure our JK/K pass holders for the back lot can use their assigned parking. There is quite a bit of public parking in the neighbourhood and our staggered entry and dismissal times help with your access to these spots. The “Resident Only” spots are not for the public nor for UA staff, they are for the residents of that lot and street; however, there is plenty of available parking in the neighbourhood as well as transit options close by.

The parent portal for booking report card interviews for Grades 6 to 12 will be open for sign-up next Wednesday, February 26. The JK to Grade 5 students have Student-Led Conferences and teachers are working with your child to prepare them to lead you through their work at school. Sign-up sheets for these meetings will be available in the lobby on Wednesday (sign-up will not be available on the parent portal). Grade 6 to 12 families have traditional report card interviews. Report cards will go home on March 4 and we will conduct Student-Led Conferences and Parent Teacher Conferences on March 5 and 6, with early dismissal at noon on Friday, March 6. Specific details are noted below.

One of the much-loved traditions at UA is the Mother’s Day Tea. We are in the planning stage and it is clear to us that we now have many more moms in the JK to Grade 5 group than we can accommodate at one tea. We will be hosting two events on the same day (May 8) so that all our guests can attend and enjoy the program. We will host a morning event with tea and goodies during which students will perform, and we will repeat the full program in the afternoon. Moms will only be able to attend one event, but the full performance will be presented both times. We will offer tickets to both events, and moms can select which time works best for them. This event is for mothers of students in JK to Grade 5 only, and the number of seats and tickets available will be limited to the number of moms in these grades.

On Wednesday, February 26 our school will observe Pink Shirt Day, where we focus on the importance of respectful, inclusive interactions with all; we remind our students that we need to live every day with the values UA stands for, not those of critical or negative behaviour and words. Students are welcome to wear a pink shirt over their uniform that day – it is not a home clothes day, simply a pink shirt with the regular uniform kilt or pants. We will work with our students on the purpose and focus of Pink Shirt Day at their assembly.

Enjoy the weekend, we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday morning.
