Dear UA Parents,

Well, here we are, heading into the last school week of 2021. What a year it has been at UA and definitely a memorable one in the Province of BC. I am optimistic that 2022 is going to be very different from 2021. I know I am looking forward to all of the great things we will be doing at UA starting after the break.

It was a busy week at UA. Thank you to our PAX and the host of parent and student volunteers who dedicated so much of their time to creating Santa’s Playground last weekend. It was a wonderful event that was attended by many UA families. It was nice to be able to have so much of our community able to come out and participate in an event.

We also had a very successful UA Model UN Conference that was hosted by our Grade 12 students for our Grade 10-12 students. The students enjoyed a keynote address by a current MLA, Mr. Fin Donnelly, who spoke about the work he did as an MP to pass a bill in parliament to ban the importing and exporting of shark fins in Canada. The students then carried on and debated issues surrounding NATO and the WHO.

Our basketball teams all had games this week; some were away games and some took place in the UA gym. It is fantastic to see all the activity that is going on in the school after hours from sports to choir to rehearsal for productions. There is lots going on.

I am excited to finally have the opportunity to experience my first UA Winter Concert next Wednesday at the Massey Theatre. Having seen and heard many of the classes preparing, I know it is going to be a fantastic and talent-filled evening of entertainment.

I want to remind everyone of the travel restrictions currently in place if you are planning to travel outside the country over the holidays: All unvaccinated youth, 5-11 years old, will need to isolate for 14 days upon returning home and will not be able to attend school during the 14-day period following their return. This includes youth who have only had a single dose of the vaccine.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Yours in education,

Mr. Slinger
