November 18, 2022

Dear UA Families,

We have had a full week at Urban Academy. Thank you to those who could join us for the AGM on Tuesday to review the last school year. It is also a big day today as one of our UA Lions Swimmers, Grade 10 Student Nathan Zhao is competing on behalf of UA at the Provincial Championships in two events. Congratulations Nathan, we are cheering you on!

It has been a beautiful and sunny week which has been atypical but welcome weather at this time of the year. November is typically the longest and darkest school month of the year; this coinciding with the busyness of end-of-term assessments can often result in higher than typical levels of stress and anxiety — for kids and for parents.

We have heard feedback from some families that they always welcome support to help them assist their kids to manage their anxiety or behaviour. There are several programs out there designed to support parents and their kids navigate these emotions in a confident way. Please know we are always here to support on the school side, during both the beautiful and challenging times of each development stage and season. We plan to share resources with you regularly as a value-added part of our mission. For this week you might find the following resources helpful: OpenMind BC and Confident Parents/Thriving Kids.

Another wonderful resource we have access to is Safer Schools Together which is providing parents with a complimentary access to download “Raising Digitally Responsible Youth – A Parent’s Guide” The guide was designed to help introduce Parents and Caregivers to leading social media platforms, video games, and relevant trends that are either being used already or have the potential to be used by their children. The guide is full of tips, how-to’s and definitions for the most widely used apps – including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and more. We hope that you find this a helpful resource.

Wishing you all good health and great support.
