June 17, 2022

Hello everyone,

The end of the school year is usually a very exciting time with so many different events taking place, and this year is no different. Some highlights that happened this week were JK students hosting an intimate breakfast with their dads, Sports Day at Hume Park for the JK-Gr. 8’s, and our Seniors either performing in Disneyland yesterday or tackling a hike around Buntzen Lake.

Next week will be the last week of school for students, and like the last few will be packed with a variety of activities. First up will be our Spring plays at the Massey Theatre on Tuesday. Both Aladdin Jr. and Beauty and The Beast Jr. will be performed, and tickets are still available. Wednesday will be Commencement where our 2022 Graduates will cross the stage and receive their diplomas – always a very special event in the school year. Finally, on Friday we will have our year-end assembly for all students. There is a new UA tradition beginning this year where we not only recognize our graduates but also celebrate our students who are ‘Stepping Up’ from one school to the next. This will be our JK’s moving up to the Junior School, Grade 3’s moving up to Middle School, and our Grade 8’s moving up to the Senior School. There will be a special portion of the day where they will be welcomed to their new floor by the older UA students in that school. We will also be recognizing some student award winners in the Upper Middle and Senior Schools. The good news for parents is that the event will be streamed so you will be able to watch it live.

I would like to thank all the parents who took some time to complete our annual UA Parent Satisfaction Survey. These surveys are very helpful for us to ascertain our strengths as well as areas of opportunity for our students and families. While we know there are always possible areas of growth, we are happy that the vast majority of our families are either satisfied or very satisfied with their Urban Academy experience. The community report can be found on the Parent Hub.

I am also very pleased to introduce Harm Hayre, who will be stepping into UA’s Parent Volunteer Coordinator Role for the coming school year. As a previous PAX member as well as a Class Parent, Harm is well versed in all things UA, and will do a fantastic job in this new role.

Finally, I would like to wish all the UA fathers and father figures a very happy Father’s Day this weekend. Thank you for everything you do, especially the love and support you show your children.

Yours in education,

Mr. Slinger
