The goal of the Urban Academy Intermediate Program is to develop confidence and resilience in students as they embody the Urban Academy Student Profile.

The UA Intermediate program offers a variety of engaging, hands-on learning experiences, geared towards developing our students’ sense of how the world works. These learning experiences are planned in a way that helps students develop essential understandings. Lessons are facilitated so that students build on their prior knowledge, make connections, engage in higher-level thinking, weigh evidence, consider varying viewpoints, and examine their assumptions.

Learning in the UA Intermediate Program has been shaped into concept-based units, consisting of big ideas or statements that are explored through the lenses of the different subject areas, widely satisfying the expectations of the BC Curriculum.

Using a concept-based framework as a foundation for teaching and learning, and implementing SmartLearning strategies and tools, the UA Intermediate Program allows the students to make effective connections among different ideas, notice inconsistencies, identify patterns, evaluate outcomes, and speculate on possibilities.

Each grade level holds “end-of-unit” exhibitions that showcase and celebrate the students learning. Other academic celebrations include National Mathematics Competitions, a school and province-wide Science Fair and Spelling Bee.
